Hello and welcome to busy works beat.com today we continue the music theory series right here at busy works beats calm slash music theory today we’re gonna focus on energetic melodies why do your melody sound so flat bland and lifeless it’s because you’re using the wrong sounds when we’re talking about energy we mean high frequency stuff when you go to the gym and you run on a treadmill you get energetic because your heart rate increases not decreases okay so it’s about high frequency things which make an energetic sound so the most energetic sound and this sound historically was used to stimulate war battles that’s why this is used for the NFL for example it’s the gladiator sport so it’s about the sound selection when we’re talking energy you can do the same thing with a sawtooth it just will sound a little bit electronic that’s because those sound other pots of harmonics so let me show you what a harmonic looks like where harmonics look like harmonics are and now I have to give you a contrast here so you understand what what the difference is so a sine wave doesn’t have many harmonics when I play one note it plays wonderfully qín see anytime all those little scratches are really parts of the click so if I took that click out and you wanted to see those so and it’s also my mic actually that’s not what it’s from it’s from my microphone picking that up me tapping the keys ok but the sine wave is nice and flat now a square wave if we simply change it we’re gonna get more harmonic that’s the super louse when we turn it down but notice the frequency response is like greater and that’s all you have to do is get sounds that have more harmonic content like brass like sawtooth sounds if you’re going for the EDM sound if you’re going for the film score sound good so let me record this and let me tap up the tempo dope just get out the way get out the way I don’t know what bpm I’m guessing 103 but let’s record okay now once we have that so let me just fix this little note here okay must’ve been playing really fast so I’m gonna quantize these notes this is outside of this realm of this video I’m just doing this because of my OCD alright so again it’s sound selection you want to think brass big strings things that have a lot of harmonics you’re not gonna use a bass like a sine wave bass to have the same energy so let’s go through a couple sounds just so you’re familiar again this goes back to that conversation about using the mallet sounds like the Rugrats theme song you our brains are so associating xylophones and mallets to kids stuff that we can’t really get an aggressive tone no matter how much music theory we apply to it we’re not gonna hear the Rugrats bells as something aggressive that’s just the the root of it all it’s psychology its anchoring okay that could pump this harder with compression and limiting in all this but hopefully you get the idea the concept look at how many horizontal lines you see those are harmonics so the let the softer sounds are gonna have less harmonics so let’s let’s switch it to an e piano just to give you a different contrast here now it also that this doesn’t sound energetic because look how many harmonics it has a lot less it almost sounds LexA days ago and said and you know depressing so let’s add the brass backing this makes you want to go to war okay so it’s not the notes that create energy it’s the sound that creates the energy so look for sounds with more harmonic content if you want to learn more about melodies go too busy works beats calm slash music theory because there you’ll find the music theory essentials course package and we also have free videos on music theory right on the page so I’ll leave a link below but go too busy works beats calm slash music theory to learn more it’s busy works beats dot-com
