Mark of the Lord

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

The old English can be hard to understand but when you break down what is being said here you can’t help but praise God for his mercy.

We are sealed with the holy Spirit of promise:

NLT: he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago

NIV: you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit

Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession:

NKJV: Which is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory

NLT: The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.

NIV: Who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession

Jesus has sealed you – he has identified you as one of his own – you are marked in him.

What has he sealed you with?
The Holy Spirit of promise – which is his guarantee – his pledge – his deposit that guarantees.

What is it a guarantee of?
That he will come back and collect his purchased possession – that he will give us the inheritance he has promised.

All of this was paid for through the blood of Jesus
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (Colossians 1:14)

Jesus has secured our redemption forever
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:12)
